The MetOp-SG SCA high power amplifier

MetOp-SG is a cooperative undertaking between ESA and EUMETSAT. The wind scatterometer (SCA) payload will be on board the Satellite-B (Sat-B) and is a real-aperture C-band radar with a peak output power of 2.2 kW, pulse length of 1.15 ms and a pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 32 Hz. In this work, the development and design of the klystron based High Power Amplifier (HPA), which is a central unit of SCA, is presented. While Airbus DS acts both as instrument prime and as HPA prime, the klystron is developed by Communications and Power Industries (CPI), Canada.
