Advanced application of IEC60870-5-101 protocol on feeder terminal unit

IEC60870-5-101 is one of the communicating protocols that has a perfect mechanism which makes it been widely used in most countries over the world in the power system. However, there are too many options in this communicating protocol for the users. These complex options makes it difficult for us to set the functions and parameters in the program. The basic functions of Standard IEC60870-5-101 and its implementing rules are introduced in this paper with the communication process on the feeder terminal unit. In China, government put forward an auxiliary Standard DL634.5101-2002 for IEC60870-5-101 protocol. Furthermore, aiming to promote and standardize the application of DL634.5101-2002 protocol, State Grid Company in Guangdong province constituted an implementing rule for it. Considering the portability and the difficulty of development, embedded Linux system is chosen to be the operation system. With the customize rules and Linux system, the engineers would save more time in developing communicating applications for Standard IEC60870-5-101.
