Performance evaluation of OOK and PAM modulations in underwater optical wireless communication system based on APD receiver

In this paper, the properties of underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) have been demonstrated based on the Monte Carlo method. We investigate the underwater channel responses of different wavelengths under different water conditions. The results show that the optimum transmission wavelength is switched from 450nm (blue) to 595nm (red) when the water condition is changed from pure to turbid harbour water. Moreover, the maximum transmission distances are achieved when using OOK/PAM based on APD receiver. In pure water, the maximum transmission distance is up to 116m at 10Mb/s data rate and 1W transmitted electrical power.
