New modulated carrier control method for power factor correction rectifier

This paper proposes new modulated carrier control (MCC) method for power factor correction (PFC) rectifier which provides high power factor (PF) and low total harmonic distortion (THD) regardless of continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). The proposed control method employs a modified MCC control circuit based on the conventional MCC using average current sensing method and zero current duration (ZCD) demodulator detecting a zero current duration of a boost inductor m each switching cycle. Using a compensation signal from ZCD demodulator, a modified controller generates duty cycles suitable for CCM and DCM operation. At the conventional MCC PFC, the line current is distorted m DCM, that results m poor PF and high THD. On the other hand, the proposed method can offer high PF and low THD m wide input and load range while maintaining the simple control loop and allowing to use small inductance compared to conventional MCC method. In this paper, the operational principle of the proposed method has been discussed. To verify the proposed method, it has been tested on a boost PFC rectifier with 400 W.
