Sign least mean kurtosis based control of three-phase solar-active power filter system

In this paper, a single-stage three-phase solar PV (Photovoltaic) system with active power filtering (APF) capabilities controlled by the sign least mean kurtosis (SLMK) algorithm is proposed. This system is capable of injecting real power to the grid while simultaneously improving the power quality (PQ) at the point of common coupling (PCC). The power quality improvements include load balancing, harmonics elimination and power factor correction (PFC). To extract power from the solar PV array, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is used. The system comprising of a PV array, VSC (Voltage Source Converter), interfacing reactors and a ripple filter is interfaced to the three-phase distribution network. At the PCC, nonlinear/linear balanced/unbalanced loads are connected. The THDs (Total Harmonic Distortions) of the grid currents and the voltages conform to the limits given by the IEEE-519 and IEEE-929 standards. The system performance is experimentally verified for a variety of loads and solar insolation levels on a prototype developed in the laboratory.
