The vertigo array for grating lobe reduction

This paper describes a new grating lobe-reduction technique that uses the concept of sparse or aperiodic arrays. This method does not affect the gain and HPBW with respect to a uniform lattice. The method implements an iterative analytic formulation, which is based on a geometric transformation of the element position, starting from an initial uniform lattice. In addition, the method implements criteria for avoiding mechanical interferences between adjacent elements. The resulting performances of such an array, called “Vertigo”, show a grating lobe reduction in the order of 20 dB, compared to an array with a periodic triangular lattice.
