Thermal analysis of consequent-pole hybrid vernier permanent-magnet machine for EV/HEV applications

Since vernier permanent-magnet machine (VPMM) has the merit of low-speed operation with high output torque due to the “magnetic-gearing” effect, they have been used in the direct-drive applications such as wind power generator, electric vehicle/hybrid electric vehicle (EV/HEV). The paper focuses on the thermal analysis of a consequent-pole HEVPMM (CP-HEVPMM) using FVM based on the losses distribution in the machine. Since, the DC field windings located between the modulation poles and are close to PMs, it will result in high temperature and have a negative influence on the PMs. The temperature field analysis of CP-HEVPMM depends on on the distributions of copper loss in DC field windings and armature windings, eddy current loss and iron loss. The loss and temperature distribution analysis in both low-speed and highspeed operation should be taken into consideration in the CP-HEVPMM design.
