Impact of faults on the efficiency of squirrel cage induction motor

Faults in any power system are the outcome of an undesirable and unexpected set of conditions that have taken place in the system. They have a major impact on all the dependent equipments or machines and adversely affect their performance. The effect of fault on the efficiency helps in the early detection of the fault, even before the severeness of the fault has reached the level that enables relays to act. This paper analyses the impact of faults like voltage unbalance, broken rotor bar and air gap eccentricity, on efficiency of a three phase squirrel cage induction motor. These faults are simulated in MATLAB Simulink by mathematical modelling of Induction Motor and drop in efficiency is estimated.
