Nature of the adsorption centers of the anion-dye J-aggregates on the surface of microcrystals in the silver-halide emulsion

The dye-induced spectral sensitization of microcrystals (MC) of a silver-halide emulsion is the main stage in the process of fabrication of the light-sensitive materials for holography. The spectral sensitization upon photo excitation of both the dye and the silver-halide MC occurs due to redistribution of the non-equilibrium charge carriers between the MC and the dye adsorbed at its surface. The mechanism of this process essentially depends on the physical nature of the surface MC centers responsible for the dye adsorption, on their charge state and on the degree of the dye aggregation. Previously, we had suggested that centers for adsorption of the anionic dye J-aggregates at the silver-halide MC surface can be interstitial silver ions of the atomic-molecular degree of dispersion Ag
₂
⁺
. In this work, this suggestion is experimentally verified. To this purpose, we investigated the influence of the reducing agent - ascorbic acid and oxygen - on the adsorption process of the anionic dye J-aggregates at the surface of silver halide MC. To control this process, we used low-temperature (T = 77 K) luminescence, since almost all the responsible centers manifest themselves in the luminescence spectrum.
