A Tx/Rx 3-20-GHz DP16T switching matrix for breast cancer detection system

A 3-20-GHz double-pole-sixteen-throw (DP16T) switching matrix has been developed on printed circuit board (PCB) for a radar-based portable breast-cancer detection system. The DP16T switch consists of four 65-nm CMOS 0.01-20-GHz double-pole-four-throw switches. The DP16T switch increase the number of Tx-Rx combination to 224 from 196 of conventional switches to improve image resolution. Using this switch and 4×4 slot antenna array, a 10mm × 10mm aluminum target was detected, in an experimental system with a consumption of only 7 mW of power. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first Tx/Rx CMOS based DP16T switch with PCB connectors.
