Sub-wavefront birefringent phase measurement of anodised aluminium surface coatings

There are many research areas where the birefringent properties of materials can be used to provide relevant measurements. In this paper 2 examples are presented which describe how a high resolution phase-encoded intensity distribution of birefringence may be used to non-intrusively derive the stress experienced by use of an anodised aluminium riveting process and a gas turbine compressor blade under impact loading.
