Electromagnetic transients in a 1000 kV system: Part I — Modeling and arc extinction

A 1000 kV system is under viability analysis to transmit the exceeding power from wind power plants (WPP) located in the Brazilian northeast region. In this article, the modeling of the 1000 kV system for electromagnetic transients and the results of arc extinction after fault conditions are examined as part of an overall line overvoltage and insulation coordination study. Some mitigation alternatives such as the use of shunt reactor neutral reactance, fast grounding switches, and opening resistors in the circuit-breakers are examined. Other relevant studies are presented as companion papers. At present, very few Ultra High Voltage (UHV) transmission projects (1000 kV or above) were constructed in the world. Three of these projects are located in China showing reportedly a satisfactory performance. Other UHV projects, although designed for such a voltage level, are operating at lower voltages. The present project is the first of its kind in Latin America; thus, its outcome may be useful for future similar projects.
