Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Communication Based Eco-Driving Operation at Multiple Signalized Intersections

Eco-driving using V2I communication at multiple intersections has significant fuel benefit for road transportation. This paper presents a fuel saving strategy for vehicle travelling in between two red signalized intersections. An optimal control problem (OCP) is formulated to minimize fuel consumption and solved by Legendre pseudo-spectral (LPS) method. It is found that the optimal driving operation falls into either two-stage or three-stage-mode. The occurrence of different states is related to intersection distance under certain speed limit. In addition, a sub-optimal operating strategy is proposed to determine the travelling trajectory for real time implementation, achieving a faster computational speed than LPS.
