Development and application of the intensive care units on transformers

It is well known that the intensive care unit (ICU) is mainly utilized in the medical field. Recently, it has been extended in power industry. For example, the ICU on the transformer can detect the potential defects. Combined with multiple monitoring systems along with the experience of operators, the evolution of the defect can be well determined. Hence, the failure can be effectively prevented. The ICU on the transformer enables the ultrasonic, ultra-high-frequency and high-frequency current detection. Both the electric and sound signals caused by partial discharges can be obtained. In addition, the ICU permits the fusion of historical testing results, the operating data SCADA, such as temperature and load, as well as the data obtained from both the online and off-line monitoring systems. Using the intelligent diagnostic techniques, the transformer condition can be comprehensively evaluated. Compared with existing condition monitoring systems, the ICU offers substantial benefits, such as a high reliability and flexibility. Meanwhile, it is convenient, and it can be installed according to the operating requirement. The data acquired by the ICU can be transmitted through the monitoring centre using 4G wireless communication. Presently, this system was successfully installed tens of substations. They provide useful references for the maintenance strategy of substation.
