Defected Ground Surface and Frequency Selective Surface Based Dual Band Microstrip Antenna

This paper proposes a novel geometry of a dual substrate Defected Microstrip structure antenna that improves the performance of dual substrate Microstrip patch antenna. Proposed antenna is designed to operate at dual band 7.4GHz and 9.1GHz. For the desired result, array of 6×6 hexagonal Frequency Selective Surface is sandwiched between the two substrates. The ground plane is made Defective ground surface by cutting hexagonal slots on PEC ground plane. The patch was also made defective Microstrip structure by cutting two hexagonal slots on it of equal dimensions. The proposed structure is fed by an inset feed. This type of miniaturized antenna with improved performance is very useful in mobile and satellite applications.
