Fault location methodology in DG based distribution networks

Interconnection of distributed generation (DG) resources to a distribution network has some impressions on protection procedures. In these circumstances, the power flow in distribution networks varies from unidirectional flow to multidirectional flow and new fault location methods should be presented aimed at considering this change in power flow. This paper proposed an improved fault location technique in order to account for the presence of DG in distribution networks. One fault location method that can be modified to include the contributions from the DGs is the method using the three-phase a,b,c components. This scheme is based on the steady-state analysis of a faulted distribution line. This paper demonstrates the modifications made to the fault location method in order to define an accurate fault location.
