An approach to improve the performance of a feedback control loop by discrete-time sensor response compensation

In general the delay in the sensor response affects the close loop performance of a control loop resulting in overshoot and prolonged settling time. In this paper the effect of online compensation of sensor delay on the close loop performance has been studied. The shell and tube heat exchanger has been considered as the candidate process since it is one of the most common processes in chemical or other industries where heat transfer is required. The thermocouple is considered as the sensor with an appreciable amount of delay in its response. It is shown in this paper that the close loop response with the compensated sensor has been improved noticeably, in terms of less overshoot and faster settling time, with respect to that of the uncompensated sensor.
