Performance Comparison of Ultra Wide Band IEEE Channel and Underground Mine Channel

In recent years, the performance analysis of UWB (Ultra-Wide Band) systems has been an area of considerable interest. To understand the fading in UWB caused by the multipath propagation in complicated environment of underground mines, a precise model of the channel response is expected for designing a UWB system. This paper presents the comparison between the UWB channel proposed by study group IEEE 802.15.SG3a and revised channel model for underground mines based on IEEE proposed channel. Parameters such as the impulse response, power decay profile, excess delay, rms (Root Mean Square) delay, channel energy, number of paths required to meet the 85% energy capture threshold, and number of significant path with in 10 dB of peak (NP
_10dB
) are analyzed and simulated. We compared the performance of the Time hopping (TH) UWB system in both channel and evaluate the bit error rate performance of a RAKE receiver employing maximal ratio combining (MRC). The simulation result show that the multipath delay characteristics of the modified mine channel model approaches well to the measured results.
