Bit Error Rate Characteristics of 3B-2T Code and 4B-3T Code

In this paper we have tried to apply several PRML (partial response maximum-likelihood) techniques to a 3B-2T code and a 4B-3T code, both conventional ternary recording codes, and have evaluated the bit error rate (BER) performance for the required S/N at the readout point by using both techniques on state transition and symbol transition matrices. The results show that the PR(1,0,-1) ML technique can be made to provide the best performance among the several combinations of PRML techniques with 3B-2T and 4B-3T codes.
