Measurements of building penetration by low orbit satellite signals at VHF

It is noted that radio propagation measurements are needed to determine whether links can be designed for indoor direct personal communication system to satellite operation, or if some sort of in-building gateway system with a rooftop transmitter will be required. To measure the attenuation of 137-MHz signals from the NOAA 9 and 11 satellites as they penetrate a building, one antenna was used to monitor the received signal at an unobstructed outdoor site and another antenna was used to characterize the received signal at a nearby indoor location. Initial measurements indicate that radio waves from a LEO satellite suffer little attenuation when they penetrate a building.<
