Design study of small-scale to large-scale superconducting generators

A design program of superconducting generators (SCG's) taking accounts of the component size of SCG's and the performance of low-temperature superconductors (LTS) and high-temperature superconductors (HTS) was developed. Fundamental designs of large-scale (200-1400 MW) SCG's employing LTS and HTS were carried out. The resulting effects of various machine parameters such as synchronous reactance, rotor diameter and maximum flux density on the machines' performance such as machine weight and efficiency were clarified. Furthermore, fundamental design of small-scale (10 MW) SCG's were carried out and the influence of adopting magnetic rotors and retrofit stators together with the effects of machine parameters were also clarified.
