The past two decades have seen computers becoming orders of magnitude smaller, cheaper and more powerful. While memory manufacturers have been packing more and more memory cells onto a single piece of silicon, processor designers have been taking a similar line in the design of single-chip microprocessors. The author also looks at supercomputing and parallelism which could lead to a global compute... View full abstract»

Although India has made rapid strides in the indigenous production of energy in the four decades since independence, the faster growth in consumption in the domestic agricultural and industrial sectors has widened the gap between demand and availability. In the next two decades, India will have to step up commercial energy production substantially. Production of energy using oil, coal, nuclear pow... View full abstract»

In transport, by land, sea or air, pressure represents a vital factor in assuring safety, economy and reliability. The author looks at the use of pressure in these applications as well as in rail networks, and fuel and power, such as oil. Calibration of pressure measuring instruments is also looked at.<> View full abstract»

The coding algorithm widely recognised as offering the best prospects for delivering toll-quality speech at very low bit rates is called CELP (codebook-excited linear prediction) coding. The CELP codec by Delphi Systems operates in real time, uses a standard digital signal processing chip, and encodes speech at 4.8 and 6.5 kbit/s. The use of this speech compression codec (SCC) is also discussed.<<... View full abstract»

A small pilot low-cost radio-telephone network has been installed in the Bonthe District of Sierra Leone, consisting of 26 stations installed for public use in small towns and districts. The network is based on stations using 27 MHz Citizen Band (CB) transceivers controlled by separate microprocessor controllers. The stations are powered by amorphous-silicon solar cells with lead-acid back-up batt... View full abstract»
