Astronomical discoveries often happen at the edge of our observational capabilities. To fully analyze telescopic images, researchers must combine data from separate telescopes, but large volumes of data with intrinsic differences make this difficult. SkyQuery, a scalable query engine, helps with this process. View full abstract»

SQLShare is a Web-based application that emphasizes a simple upload-query-share protocol over conventional database design and uses ad hoc interactive query over general-purpose programming. Here, a case study examines the use of SQLShare as an alternative to script-based scientific workflows for a project in observational biological oceanography. View full abstract»

Large scientific repositories risk losing value as their holdings expand, because scientists must work harder to locate particular datasets of interest. In an effort to resolve this issue, the Data Near Here application applies information retrieval techniques to dataset search. View full abstract»

For simulation-based work, researchers often have limited hardware capacities and budgets, so they create a low-cost parallel computing platform using PCs and commodity hardware, assembled and configured as a Beowulf-class computing cluster. Here, an astute approach (for a molecular dynamics simulation example) greatly improves performance through hardware upgrades and other tricks. View full abstract»
