  • The Seizure Prediction Problem in Epilepsy: Cellular Nonlinear Networks

    70 million people are affected by epilepsy which is the most common chronic neurological disorder worldwide. About 70% of patients can expect an effective seizure control with medication. The realization of an implantable device capable of detecting impending seizures, warning patients and rendering some kind of treatment would be of great benefit. In this contribution, a brief history of epilepsy and an introduction to terminology and symptoms are given followed by a short summary of current research going on in the field of seizure prediction. Afterwards, an introduction to Cellular Nonlinear Networks (CNN , a paradigm for high speed computation) is given and finally a presentation of 4 different CNN based approaches to epileptic seizure prediction will convey a vision of the methods possibly used one day on an implantable seizure warning device.   • The VITA 49 Analog RF-Digital Interface

    Over the last several years, the interface between the digital and analog RF subsystems of a radio (the analog RF-digital interface) has become increasingly important. this article first discusses the different technology alternatives that exist for this interface and the rationale behind them. the emergence of cognitive radio technology is identified as a trend that increases the importance of the analog RF-digital interface. then the article discusses in detail the VmE bus International trade association (VIta) 49 standard. VIta 49 is a packet-based protocol to convey digitized signal data and metadata (or context data) pertaining to different reference points within a radio receiver. the metadata includes analog front-end parameters such as RF center frequency, bandwidth, If center frequency, sampling rate, gain, location, etc. this standard allows all information about the spectrum as seen by a radio at its antenna to be described, stored, and transported to other systems.     Since the pioneering studies of small-world and scale-free networks in the late 1990s [1], [2], we have witnessed fruitful advances in our understanding of the complex connection properties and characteristics of the many diverse large-scale distributed interconnected systems, both natural and man-made, with examples ranging from the Internet, the World Wide Web, biological neural networks, protein-to-protein interaction networks, power-grids, wireless communication networks to social, economic and financial networks in human society [3][10]. Extensive efforts have been devoted to characterizing the rich connectivity patterns among the nodes (components) of such complex networks (systems), and in the course of development of research in this area, people have been prompted to address on a fundamental question: How does the fascinating yet complex topological features of a network affect or determine the collective behavior and performance of the networked system? While elegant attempts to address this core issue have been made, for example, from the viewpoints of synchronization [11][16], epidemics [17][22], evolutionary cooperation [23][26], and the control of complex networks [27][30], theoretically or empirically, this widely concerned key question still remains open in the newly emergent field of network science.   • Engineering Challenges in Cochlear Implants Design and Practice

    Since the first successful cochlear implantation in the early 1970s by the House group in Los Angeles, about 120,000 patients have received cochlear implants (CI) worldwide, with more every year [1]. The premise of using electrical stimulation on the sensory nerves, either for visual or acoustic perceptions, is not new. Attempts were made in the 19th century by several researchers with backgrounds in engineering and/or medicine. The only documented account for that period was one by Volta and it was an accidental observation when he applied an electrical current into his ear canals. When this current was applied, he reported he heard a bubbling or crackling sound. Many years later, the first human implant was performed by an engineer/physician team of Djourno and Eyries in 1937. Unfortunately, it was obscurely published, and at the brink of war was therefore largely neglected until the 1970's. The concept was then resurrected by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with funding to support researchers in U.S. and subsequently in Australia and Europe. View full abstract»

Aims & Scope

Insofar as the technical articles presented in the proposed magazine, the plan is to cover the subject areas represented by the Society's transactions, including: analog, passive, switch capacitor, and digital filters; electronic circuits, networks, graph theory, and RF communication circuits; system theory; discrete, IC, and VLSI circuit design; multidimensional circuits and systems; large-scale systems and power networks; nonlinear circuits and systems, wavelets, filter banks, and applications; neural networks; and signal processing.
