    In any technical domain, there are certain developments that cut across years and technological generations and, to a significant degree, shape the entire field. One particular development, from which aspiring electrical engineers can learn, is the story that follows the evolution of the transistor from the early integrated circuits (ICs) years and continuing on into the future. It is a fine example of what happens "when engineering ingenuity and market forces work hand in hand toward accomplishing a specific goal, "which in this case is the continued, undisrupted delivery of better performing and cheaper electronics. A transistor is a semiconductor device designed to amplify and/or switch an electrical signal and is very much a cornerstone of semiconductor engineering. The metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) is of particular interest in this regard, as for over 30 years, the performance of logic integrated circuits continues to be defined by the modifications of this particular transistor structure.     This article documents the design and implementation of an electronic field guide for bird watchers-named RB Birds-developed to run on mobile smart phones and aimed at looking up, checking, and identifying 362 bird species that are encountered at the Rio Blanco Ecological Reserve, "which is located on the outskirts of Manizales, Colombia. This application package has a database that contains information corresponding to each species including images, songs, physical descriptions, feeding habits, migratory movements in time and space, and habitat requirements, among others.   • Single-Event Soft Errors in CMOS Logic

    In this article, various mechanisms for combinational logic-related radiation induced soft errors such as SE-induced soft delays, SE clock jitter and clock pulse, and SE crosstalk effects have been discussed. Our analysis shows that increasing SE crosstalk noise and delay effects occur with smaller technologies. This work has finally discussed hardening techniques for SE crosstalk noise and delay. Results are shown using HSpice Simulations with interconnect and device parameters derived from Predictive Technology Model for 65 nm. View full abstract»

  • A Pseudo-Divide-By-Carrier Coherent Demodulator for DSB-SC Signals

    A novel demodulation technique was introduced to recover the baseband signal from a DSB-SC pass-band signal. The technique relies on an arithmetic division of the DSB-SC wave by a synchronized carrier wave. The phase error and frequency drifts may lead to severely corrupted signal. A earner recovery technique (PLL or signal squaring method) are recommended for robust operation. The electronic circuit responsible for regenerating baseband signal was introduced. To ensure stable operation, a pseudo division technique is briefly introduced to avoid the accidental division by zero for nonsynchronized earners. The proposed technique builds a coherent direct conversion demodulator that needs no filtering and thus accommodates various baseband bandwidths. Simulation results show that using a synchronized carrier will result in accurate results. However, the complexity shall increase while implementing the pseudo division and thus conventional direct conversion receivers become simpler, but on the cost of involving filtering, which limits baseband bandwidths and introduces phase delay.   • An Eye on Visual Sensor Networks

    Networks of visual sensors have recently emerged as a new type of sensor-based intelligent system, with performance and complexity challenges that go far beyond those of existing wireless sensor networks (WSN). For many years now, networks of cameras have been used for surveillance and security. These networked cameras, unable to process any data locally, would send their individual streams to a centralized location and rely upon human vision and cognition to detect events and anomalies. Advances in computational technologies have allowed for much improvement in the hardware of these systems, such as higher picture quality and motorization capabilities. However, only recently have there been attempts to integrate the latest research developments in human and computer vision into current sensor technologies. The ultimate goal of visual sensor network (VSN) designers is to enable the cameras (nodes) to perform more advanced vision tasks locally, in a fully automated way. When combined, these cameras would constitute an intelligent visual system capable of detecting not only objects within their range, but also the events created by these objects. View full abstract»
