Cloud computing provides a computing paradigm that has the potential for drastically reducing the complexity of information technology management and delivering the promise of utility computing. Building on virtualization technologies, cloud computing facilitates easily configurable, manageable, and scalable services that may be purchased as needed. This issue of the IBM Journal of Research and Development emphasizes software and hardware technologies that form the foundational building blocks for scalable and secure cloud computing.
