This article provides an overview of the architecture of system science developed by Qian Xuesen, with a particular stress laid upon the methodology and theoretical basis of systems engineering. The latter refers mainly to the establishment of systematology. Presented here is an introduction to some conclusions on the object, content and method of systematology study that have been reached by a seminar under the personal direction of Qian Xuesen. In the present world international strategic pattern is entering a period of reconstitution and readjustment in the high tide of new technological revolution and the fierce turbulence of political situation. The interweaving of the presence and continuing development of strategic nuclear weapons with the great achievement and rapid advance of space technology lead, our world into an era of “space-nuclear overlapping”. The detente and the dialogue on the earth cover lip the confrontation and contention in the outer space. In the wake of the implementation and progress of SDI. the prospects of“star wars” cast hazy shadows on the development and employment of outer space. What is the outlook of the space? What impact will the exploitation of outer space make on the economic life, political life and military confrontation of the human society, along with the progress of space technology? This article analyses and discusses the relevant issues from the grand strategic. and scientific and technological pointof view. View full abstract»

  • The isolation of dual-polarization multiplex microstrip antennas

A simple theory is developed for the analysis of isolation of dual-polarization multiplex microstrip antennas. The analysis is based on the “cavity model” and the “reaction principle”. The shape of the field distribution between the patch and ground plane is assumed to be well approximated by that of the resonant modes of a corresponding magnetic and electric walled cavity. Two element microstrip antennas of various geometries for either transmitting or receiving linearly and circularly polarized waves are studied. Some methods are found to reduce their physical dimensions and to evaluate the isolation between the elements for various configurations View full abstract»

  • A fuzzy sequential optimization method for the antenna structures with multiple objectives

    Page(s): 48 - 54

This paper presents a fuzzy sequential optimization method for the antenna structures with multiple objectives (structural displacement, weight, cost, nature frequency characteristic) based on fuzzy sets. This has led to a set oj new concepts which are discussed here. The paperestablishes a sequential optimization model, in which the cost function is constructed, the membership function of single objective is defined as extended quadratic function, the membership function in decision making is constructed with linearly weighted and power product weighted models and the objectives are classed. In addition, the paper presents two methods, namely the linear extended method and the secondary constrained sequential optimization method, by which effective satisfactory design can be found. A computer program is given, optimization computing of the truss-type and antenna structures are described. It is shown that the method is practical and effective. View full abstract»

  • A new effective method for ship target recognition

In this paper, the problem oj reliable automatic target recognition from incoherent radar returns is discussed and a new method for ship target recognition is proposed. Based on this method, an experimental system for ship target recognition is implemented. The results obtained from the theoretical and experimental study indicate that a high reliability of recognition can be achieved by using the designed recognition system. An average success rate of more than 90%is reachedfor 8 classes of ships. View full abstract»

A multifeature statistical image segmentation algorithm is described. Multiple features such as grey, edge magnitude and correlation are combined to form a multidimensional space statistics. The statistical algorithm is used to segment an image using the decision curved surface determined by the muitidimensional feature function. The segmentation problem which, is diffiicult to solve using the features independently will be readily solved using the same features jointly. An adaptive segmentation algorithm is discussed. Test results of the real-time TV tracker newly developed have shown that the segmentation algorithm discussed here improves effectively the image segmentation quality and system tracking performance. In this paper, the AMSAA-BISE model with missing data is discussed. The ML estimates of model parameters and current MTBF are given, and the chi-squared test and a plot for cumulativenumber of failures versus cumulative testing time are used- to test the goodness of fit for the model. This paper concludes with a numerical example to verify the model. View full abstract»

Generally speaking. Chinese college graduates in the fifties and sixties took Russian as their second language, and those who graduated in the seventies had no second language to speak of. Now, in the years of our Open Door Policy, they find they have to learn some English and learn it quickly. They try to learn from radio and TV and many take English courses of 4 to 6 months, with varying degree of success. Their chief stumbling blocks are the longer English sentences — those with 30 words or more — which abound in technical literature, appearing even in some instruction manuals. They know the meaning of every word in the sentence, yet fail to comprehend it as a whole. View full abstract»
