Issue 5 • Date Sept.-Oct. 2011
Frontiers of Information Technology
This issue celebrates the 100th anniversary of IBM. Throughout its history, IBM has worked to provide information technology systems that advance the power and capability of businesses worldwide. Systems with the ability to transform business have always been the goal. This issue contains a selection of papers that outline the frontiers of information technology that point to a paradigm shift. In the future, the machines of business will provide insight as well as calculations. Machines will provide pertinent patterns, suggestions, and questions that humans did not even think to see, make, or ask. Included in this issue are papers on speech recognition, computer vision, augmented reality, healthcare transformation, privacy-aware data sharing, prediction of genetic variations, tracking in social media, anomaly detection in information streams, self-organizing systems, technologies for exascale systems, and quantum computing.
