In this article, the offshore production platform's two 25-MW turbine generator units were evaluated to determine the safe operating limits of the units if the entire load is to be carried by one generator. A case study is performed to determine whether load shedding will be necessary if only one generator is in operation. The generator reactive capability curve was constructed based on limited da... Most human-powered energy-harvesting systems are used to power ubiquitously deployed sensor networks and mobile electronics. These systems scavenge power from human activity or derive limited energy from ambient heat, light, or vibrations. In this article, systems that use human power by walking or running are analyzed, where an alternative system has been designed and implemented that generates e... View full abstract»

The Primary Goal of this article is to discuss the development of intelligent controls for a power electronic inverter capable of interfacing a photovoltaic (PV)-based unit to the utility grid. The inverter is designed as a single-phase, full-bridge converter operating at 120 V, 60 Hz ac. The control functionalities of the inverter are defined under the perspective of the Smart Grid Initiative (SG... View full abstract»

In this article, a passive harmonic filter design scheme is proposed for offshore power distribution systems with subsea cables. Such an offshore system requires more reliable harmonic filters due to parallel resonance and the resultant large harmonic distortions in the system caused by subsea cables. The new passive harmonic filter design scheme is easy to achieve and more reliable compared to tr... View full abstract»

This article shows that lamp aging has a significant correlation with flicker generation. In this research work, a test system and a methodology able to measure optical fluctuation produced by different types of lamps and ballast are presented. This experimental platform provides a correlation between voltage flicker levels and optical flicker perception. This platform can be considered as a first... View full abstract»

A new dc and pulsed dc TIG welding power supply has been designed. Power modules connected in parallel with interleaving operation achieve scalable output current with no reduction of the single module performance and limiting the output current ripple. The resonant converter is supplied by an active rectifier from the AC mains with a reduction of mains current peak by five times. View full abstract»

This article has answered many of the questions that occur when a distribution engineer starts a power-flow study. It is important that the engineer understands why the study is important and what can be learned about the system from the studies. By means of an example system, some of the operating conditions that can be determined from the study are demonstrated. Changes can be made in the sys te... View full abstract»

Flux monitoring via air gap flux probes is a proven technology used for many years in synchronous machines to determine the presence of turn-to-turn shorts in a rotor winding. This information is critical in planning maintenance outages and augmenting online vibration analysis. Traditionally, flux measurements are done using flux probes installed on a stator wedge and a portable or permanently con... View full abstract»
