The Cyber Tyre was born in 2001 during a meeting in Berkeley between Fabio Romeo, then a Pirelli executive responsible for a business unit that dealt with the development and commercializaι tion of new tire concepts, and Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli. The point of the meeting was how to collect the information that the tires "see" when they meet the road! In 2001 at Berkeley, there was a great deal of activity in the area of wireless sensor networks originated by the "smart dust" concept pioneered by Kris Pister. Groundbreaking research was carried out at the Berkeley Wireless Research Center on pico-radios with minimal power consumption (Jan Rabaey), energy scavenging (Paul Wright), tiny operating systems (Dave Culler), node architecture and design (Kris Pister), and design methodologies for wireless sensor networks (Alberto) and at the Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center on smart integrated sensors. Prof. Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli has had a profound impact on many business and research operations and touched many people's lives. Examples of his influence can be found from the halls of the University of California, Berkeley, to the offices of Cadence Design Systems and its research facility at Berkeley (see Figure 1). This paper discussed about Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli who has been one of the most influential innovators in the domain of electronic design automation (EDA) over the past 40 years. It is hard to find any topic in the field to which he has not contributed in one form or another. Yet over the past decade his attention has been uniquely and passionately devoted to the conception and realization of a methodology called platformbased design (PBD). The premise of PBD is to bring to system-level design the same mathematical rigor and structured design philosophy that has been so successful at the physical and logic design levels. Or-as Alberto stated very succinctly in his keynote at CDNLife! in 2007-to transform the field of system-level design from an art into a science. View full abstract»

I was supposed to meet Alberto in the spring of 1986. I was a graduating senior with a National Science Foundation (NSF) fellowship in hand and acceptance letters from the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford, so I decided to visit the Bay Area on my spring break to decide which university to attend. I had told the NSF that I was hoping to work on analog circuit synthesis, and it was already clear that the best place in the world to do that would be in the research groups of Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli and Richard Newton. However, I was more aggressive than that! My intention was to complete an IC-focused one year master's degree at Stanford first and then transfer to Berkeley for my Ph.D., saving the time of a master's thesis while getting the benefits of two world-class institutions. For my plan to work, I needed to know that there would be a spot for me at Berkeley—in what was then called the CAD group—in a year. View full abstract»
