The ongoing development of logic analysers has been fuelled by continual improvements in microprocessor technology, allowing cost-effective implementation of advanced measurement techniques. This continual development has been driven, to a great extent, by the need to be able to debug complex microprocessor-based or high-speed state machine designs. The author discusses some of the improvements in... View full abstract»

The author describes how electronic sensors for scent and odours work. Gases produce changes in the properties of an array of sensors, resulting in electrical signals, which are then amplified, linearised for gas concentration and digitised before being fed into a pattern-recognition system. The gas sensitive layer is tin oxide with catalytic additives for detection of particular gases. The author... View full abstract»

  • Intelsat's new generation

    Publication Year: 1990, Page(s):111 - 113

The author gives a brief history of the Intelsat satellites and then discusses the requirements for the seventh generation of satellites. These satellites are needed in the Pacific Ocean region and the Atlantic Ocean region. The main coverage features are briefly discussed. The Intelsat VII series are smaller than the Intelsat VI series and have fewer transponders. The main components and construc... View full abstract»

The privatisation of the UK electricity supply industry is expected to lead to an increase in small scale local power generation. The authors give the four basic reasons for employing generation local to the load. The authors discuss the example of an industrial consumer receiving power at 11 kV but with a local generator to provide the peak-lopping function and to ensure supply security. They dis...
