Colour has become important in many graphics applications because it increases visual appeal, simplifies data interpretation and increases the amount of information that can be displayed. By means of a look-up table, a graphics package can display a selection from an immense variety of colours even using relatively limited memory space. The use of these video look-up tables is discussed View full abstract»

The new mobile-telephony technology or Cordless Technology 2 (CT2) owes its origin to the original CT1 technology that forms the basis of current cordless telephone handsets. CT2 is a digital reworking of CT1 which means better speech quality, less interference and protection against eavesdroppers. The author describes CT2 and looks at new networks underway in the UK View full abstract»

During the past 6 years, schools and day centres for the physically handicapped have come to make more and more use of computers and computer based equipment. Microcomputers have made a great difference to the lives of many severely physically handicapped people, and could improve many more lives in the future. Microcomputers can be used in speechless communication, mobility and multi-purpose move... View full abstract»

  • Formal chip design-a functional approach

    Publication Year: 1989, Page(s):183 - 186

Designing chips by formal methods currently takes a long time and requires considerable specialist knowledge. The author looks at a method of chip design where the equivalence of the initial specification and the fine gate level design is demonstrated with all the rigour of a mathematical proof. This prevents bugs only being found when the chip is in actual use View full abstract»

The Hong Kong mass transit railway (MTR) was designed to have four routes, of which three are in service so far. It has 39 km of double track and 37 stations and carries up to 90000 passengers per hour in each direction under crush conditions. Design of the system is therefore vital in terms of safety and the stations, trains and power supplies are discussed while considering this aspect View full abstract»
