Fuses are produced in large numbers and in a wide variety of types ranging from those capable of protecting 132 kV equipment down to the miniature versions used in electronic circuits. The review starts by tracing the development of fuses before the beginning of the 20th century and then describes the constructions of the basic types now in use. This is followed first by a consideration of the fac... View full abstract»

The operating principles and applications of charge coupled devices (c.c.d.s) are reviewed. Initially, simplified quantitative explanations are given of the physical operation, design and defects of c.c.d. structures. Their application to time-delay signal processing in the time and frequency domains is next considered. This is followed by consideration of c.c.d.s as image sensors for television o... During the past 10 years microwave holography has been developed from an interesting extension of optical holography to a means of remote imaging with properties unique to this long-wavelength region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This review contains a concise derivation of the diffraction and communication theory of holography applied to the microwave regime and to small-scale imaging systems.... View full abstract»

The review paper traces the history of wind-driven plant from a point when it was first considered for electricity generation in about 1890. The build up of a significant level of available technology for large-scale exploitation is demonstrated, based on research and development that has since taken place, together with some of the concurrent commercial achievements. Plant subsystem design option... View full abstract»
