The author surveys the 20 or so decades of frequency of the electromagnetic spectrum, and discusses both the energy and information which can be extracted from it. The Sun provides abundant radiant energy, which is being used to an increasing extent to provide terrestrial power. The history and use of radio waves, the visible spectrum, and X, gamma and cosmic rays are examined. In recent years opt... View full abstract»

Engineering competence is a fusion of many skills and attributes. The authors advocate the superiority of the industrial situation as a tool for developing the competence of undergraduate engineers. An adaptable syndicate study framework is presented, which provides an arguably better education vehicle than conventional teaching and learning methods. The advantages and disadvantages are discussed ... View full abstract»

The detection of breast cancer at an early stage is of vital importance if the high mortality rate from this disease is to be reduced. The national breast-screening programme aims to use regular X-ray examinations amongst the age group most at risk to increase the early detection rate. A result of this is that over 1 million pairs of X-ray images per year will need to be reviewed by radiologists. ... View full abstract»

For pt.1 see ibid., vol.1, no.9, p.273-6 (1992). The author considers a wide range of activities as potential material for a continuing professional development (CPD) portfolio, including techniques similar to those used to rate National Vocational Qualifications applied to selected working experiences as distinct from courses. Existing course credit rating systems are reviewed together with techn... View full abstract»
