This article presents experiences from the introduction of a new three hour interdisciplinary course on computational intelligence (CI) taught at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, USA at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This course is unique in the sense that it covers five main paradigms of CI and their integration to develop hybrid intelligent systems. The paradigms covere... View full abstract»

This paper consists of a discussion of the potential impact on computer science education of regarding computation as a property of the natural world, rather than just a property of artifacts specifically created for the purpose of computing. Such a perspective is becoming increasingly important: new computing paradigms based on the natural computational properties of the world are being created, ... View full abstract»

As the robot soccer system becomes stabilized, it has been used as an educational platform with which various topics on mobile robotics can be taught. As one of key topics in the education of mobile robotics is computational intelligence-based navigation, this paper proposes a multiobjective population-based incremental learning (MOPBIL) algorithm to obtain the fuzzy path planner for optimal path ... This paper tackles the issue of building a large-scale virtual organization for individuals and institutions that are associated with the field of computational intelligence (CI) and machine learning (ML). It begins with a few scenarios that will help illustrate the need for a virtual community in CIML. View full abstract»

Education is an overall framework where dissemination and teaching are means to be used, with a common purpose but being addressed to different audiences. Education in soft computing could be an objective by itself, but at the same time it is a mean for promoting Science and Innovation in a changing society. The European centre for soft computing is involved in different educational activities acc... View full abstract»

This article describes a course that has been taught for about a half dozen times at two institutions and how it has evolved. The course began in the 1990's at the University of Pittsburgh and focused on genetic algorithms, at that time the highest profile paradigm among the metaheuristics. The course title is Adaptive Optimization although Metaheuristics Inspired by Nature is probably a more desc... View full abstract»
