  • Electromagnetic induction in finite-length cylinders: an exact solution

    Publication Year: 1987, Page(s):761 - 767
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (998 KB)

The calculation of electromagnetic fields and currents induced in circularly cylindric metallic shells by low-frequency external fields is discussed, with focus on the effects of finite cylinder length. For an inducing field possessing rotational symmetry about an axis parallel to the shell axis, we have developed approximate analytic solutions. Further, for the degenerate case of coincident axes,... View full abstract»

  • On certain properties of the electric vector potential in eddy-current problems. Part 2

    Publication Year: 1987, Page(s):768 - 772
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (416 KB)

The boundary-value problem for eddy currents induced in a magnetic solid by an external magnetic field is considered. It is shown that the Lorentz or Coulomb condition in general cannot be applied for systems comprising magnetic solids of finite extents. These conditions are applicable for systems comprising nonmagnetic solids. Therefore the nonhomogeneous diffusion equation can be derived only fo... View full abstract»

  • Determination of steady-state temperature rises of power transformers

    Publication Year: 1987, Page(s):773 - 778
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (786 KB)

The methods of determining steady-state temperature rises specified in present standards for power transformers do not ensure reliable and accurate determination of steady-state temperature rises. Therefore, improvements of temperature rise test procedures and of methods of determining steady-state temperature rises are proposed. The application of these improvements provides a more accurate deter... View full abstract»

  • Thickness and conductivity measurement of sheets of nonferrous metals

    Publication Year: 1987, Page(s):779 - 783
    Cited by:  Papers (1)
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (409 KB)

The paper describes a noncontact thickness gauge for nonferrous sheet metals. By operating at a frequency where the sheet is electrically thick it is possible to measure separately the thickness and conductivity. Theoretical and practical models of the gauge are examined. View full abstract»

  • Calculation of the rod-plane voltage/current characteristics using the saturated current density equation and Warburg's law

    Publication Year: 1987, Page(s):784 - 788

A systematic study is made of the rodplane corona electrical characteristics and of their dependence on the rod diameter, gap length and the applied voltage. The truncation of current density footprint resulting from the proximity of current fields and geometrical factors is also reported. A model to calculate the voltage/current characteristic, based on the saturated current density equation and ... View full abstract»

  • VLF spectral characteristics of leader pulses

    Publication Year: 1987, Page(s):789 - 792
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (404 KB)

VLF spectra radiated by the stepped leaders of lightning discharges have been obtained by a wideband technique, recording the atmospheric waveforms during active thunderstorms using an aperiodic receiver. From the detailed experimental study it is found that the VLF amplitude spectra of a series of leader pulses will be broad when the mean pause time between successive steps of leader pulses is of... • Coupling between jacketed braided coaxial cables

    Publication Year: 1987, Page(s):793 - 798
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (648 KB)

A model that predicts coupling between two or more jacketed braided coaxial cables in nonflat pack configurations in free space is presented. The model will also predict the coupling between jacketed cables over a ground plane. The method of moments technique is used to determine the external line parameters between the cables, and an eigenvalue method is employed to find the coupling between the ... View full abstract»

    Publication Year: 1987, Page(s):799 - 806
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (1246 KB)

The paper describes the structure and operation of the present, production, version of the Bradford musical instrument simulator and looks at further enhancements that are being planned and tested. The description is preceded by a discussion of methods of audio waveform creation by electronic means. The Bradford musical instrument simulator is a digital, microprocessor-controlled, generator of wav... View full abstract»

  • Nontactile estimation of glottal excitation characteristics of voiced speech

    Publication Year: 1987, Page(s):807 - 813
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (996 KB)

A record of voiced speech is LPCanalysed. It is also partitioned into a sequence of short signals, each containing a single glottal pulse. Each short signal is taken to be the convolution of a component varying from one short signal to the next and an invariant component, corrupted by a significant but not overwhelming contamination, i.e. noise plus all other imperfections. The invariant component... View full abstract»

The educational processes in Britain, unlike those of our major industrial competitors, are biased towards the production of specialists. The ratio of scientists to engineers is out of balance with contemporary needs. Industry requires a new balance in the output of specialists and engineering generalists to ensure that the two key functions of product engineering research and development and manu... For an economy to flourish it needs a well developed capital market with efficient mechanisms to bring savings and investment opportunities together, and the City of London is undergoing major changes to meet growing internationalism. The role of its financial institutions is explained from three aspects: the historical evolution, the sources of funds that have been available to it, and those key ... View full abstract»

The paper summarises briefly the main facts of the Chernobyl incident, the reactions to it, and the consequences in terms of global atmospheric pollution. Meteorological conditions determined the pattern of fallout, which over the UK for Cs137 varied in the ratio 10: 4000 Bq/m2 (on grass). There has been poor understanding by the media and the public of the quantitative aspects, aggravated by the ... View full abstract»
