  • Modulational instability in a nonlinear transmission line

    Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):261 - 264
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (375 KB)

The paper investigates the instability of the sidebands about the amplitude-modulated wave propagating along a nonlinear transmission line described by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, i¿¿1, + p¿¿xx + q|¿¿|2¿¿ = 0, where both coefficients p and q are positive, the instability for the sidebands is investigated. The instability condition is expressed by a relationship between amplitude of carrier... View full abstract»

  • Low-frequency electrical characteristics of fresh concrete

    Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):265 - 271
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (909 KB)

The paper describes the development of a nondestructive test method, which is based on measurement of electrical parameters, for the assessment of the condition of structural concrete. The basic physical chemistry of concrete is explained and brief details are given of the equipment for the given test technique. The results of experiments made using the technique are given and discussed in terms o... View full abstract»

  • A new national electrical noise standard in x-band

    Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):272 - 274
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (384 KB)

In July 1983 a new UK electrical noise standard for the band 8.2¿¿12.4 GHz was brought into service. The paper describes the physical, thermal and electrical design as well as the methods used to evaluate the device. The results of measurements on a noise tube using the new standard are given and the implications discussed. View full abstract»

  • Exact solutions for debye-like relaxations in multilayered conducting dielectrics

    Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):275 - 279
    Cited by:  Papers (1)
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (661 KB)

An exact determination of the equivalent dielectric constant of relaxing multilayered dielectrics is derived using Laplace transforms. To highlight in the simplest way the relevant general features, solutions are given in the only case of Debye-like relaxations with superimposed conductivities. Theoretical expressions are found for the equivalent permittivities ¿¿¿¿ and ¿¿s, at infinite and zero f... View full abstract»

  • Model of the formation of a dry band on an NaCl-polluted insulation

    Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):285 - 290

IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (696 KB)

A model of the apperarance of a dry band on a flat insulator subjected to saline fog pollution has been experimentally and theoretically investigated with the following simple hypotheses: (a) the surface temparature of the insulator is uniform, (b) the mass of evaporated water is proportional to the temparature difference between the conducting pollution layer and the ambient atmosphere, (c) the p... • A new microcomputer-based online ocular artefact removal (OAR) system

    Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):291 - 300
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (1342 KB)

In many clinical and psychological situations it is often helpful to remove ocular artefacts (OAs) from the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals so that the true EEG can be analysed. These artefacts are associated with movements in the ocular system (eyelids, eyeball etc). Although satisfactory OA removal is now possible offline, online OA removal has hitherto been unsatisfactory. The previously rep... View full abstract»

  • Strategic decision making in competitive marketing channels using a differential games framework

    Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):301 - 310
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (1132 KB)

In the paper a decision support tool for helping marketing managers of manufacturing companies and chief buyers of retail chains to examine various strategic options in competitive situations is described. The decision aid considers the problems of decision making in a system comprising two competing manufacturers who make a product which they sell through two competing retailers to consumers. The... The papers are taken from the colloquium on `An energy strategy for the UK¿¿ organised by the Engineering and Society Executive Committee (M2) of the IEE's Management and Design Division. Five papers are presented. The keynote speech on the UK Government's approach to energy policy by the Under Secretary of State for Energy is complemented by a review of the issues which an energy policy should ad... • The history of STC

    Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):319 - 327
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (1894 KB)

The paper concentrates on the technical history of STC PLC, spanning just over 100 years. In that time the company has grown from an importer of technology to an originator and developer, mainly in telecommunications. It began in the City of London in 1883 as a two-man one-boy branch of the American manufacturer Western Electric, became part of ITT in 1925 and in 1982, just before its centenary, a...
