A method for the calculation of fully three-dimensional electromagnetic fields is presented. The continuous field problem is modelled by a network representation. Solution of the field is performed in terms of a scalar magnetic potential in nonconducting regions. In conductors the curl v curl A equation is solved by a loop variable method for the magnetic vector potential alone. No scalar is requi... View full abstract»

  • Viscous torque of disc-type magnetic fluid slip clutches

    Publication Year: 1984, Page(s):584 - 590

The flux density pattern on the disc face of a magnetic clutch is analysed by conformal mapping of the coil-gap configuration. The suspension rheology of iron/silicone mixtures is used to derive the viscous torque transmitted by the clutch disc rotating in a non-Newtonian medium in a narrow enclosure. Since disc Reynolds numbers are small for normal operating slips of fluid clutches, only Couette-... View full abstract»

  • Rheological behaviour of iron-silicone fluid mixtures used in magnetic slip clutches

The rheological behaviour of electrolytic iron powder of <37 ¿¿m and 37¿¿50 ¿¿m diameter mixed with silicone carrier fluids of 20, 50 and 100 cstokes kinematic viscosity, used in magnetic fluid clutches, is investigated through viscometric and rheometric experiments for volume fractions ranging from 5 to 33% empirical equations are given to represent the behaviour. It is shown that these non-Ne... View full abstract»

  • Theorems on power, mean and RMS values of uniformly sampled periodic signals

    Publication Year: 1984, Page(s):598 - 600
    Cited by:  Papers (6)

It is shown that previously published theorems on uniform sampling of signals need modification. Modified theorems are stated and proved. General theorems for exact power evaluation and for the minimum number of samples are stated and proved. A simplified version of the latter theorem, which is useful in practical situations, is restated. Finally, conditions for equal mean and RMS values of sample... View full abstract»

A new FM tachotelemeter is presented as a suitable application of a small ferrite orthogonal core. The device is constructed from a combination of small ferrite orthogonal cores and permanent magnets. It can measure the rotation speed and the bend of the shaft simultaneously without making contact, and also the rotation speed, from rest to high-speed, continuously. The purpose of the paper is to pr... View full abstract»

  • Analysis of the arc formed along the surface of a flat plate immersed in a laminar flow of gas

    Publication Year: 1984, Page(s):605 - 609
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (586 KB)

In crossblast circuit breakers the residual arc is driven by gas flow into a series of plates (chutes) which, in effect, `cut¿¿ the arc and so achieve extinction. This process is analysed using a conventional similarity boundary layer approach. The arc forms a sheet current flowing adjacent to the plane surface which is itself parallel to the gas flow. In contrast to previous calculations, the arc... View full abstract»

  • Full-wave computed tomography. Part 1: Fundamental theory

The definition of computed tomography (CT) is generalised to the formation, from data gathered using any appropriate physical process, of a clean image of a cross-section of a body. The theory is based on a canonical partial differential equation of second-order, so that the existence of reflection, refraction, scattering and diffusion is recognised implicitly from the outset. It is shown that the... View full abstract»

Invoking our recently developed exact inverse theory, we derive limits on the resolution of individual spatial frequency components of a reconstructed image, set by imperfections of measurement. These are minimum limits, only achievable when one knows how to invert data without adulterating the underlying theory with strong assumptions (sweeping approximations are implicit in most practical invers... An outline of the design and technical policy of a small specialist company, which has defined for itself a particular niche in the wide field of the various types and applications of actuators, is presented. A high proportion of design effort goes into contacts with customers, both selling expertise to them and receiving feedback of their needs. The aim is a simple economical product, made more v... The paper presents the reasons for the apparent decline of Britain's manufacturing industry, and emphasises the seriousness of this problem. The fact that many of the UK's imports are in the high-technology area is discussed; the motor-car and electrical goods industries are cited as particular examples. Steps taken to improve the competitiveness in the UK manufacturing industry are reported, and ... View full abstract»

In a period of declining real resources universities will have to devote more attention to their management structures. The management needs of those universities which wish to have a closer relationship with industry, commerce and the public sector are discussed and illustrated with reference to the changes which have occurred at the University of Salford since 1981. It is concluded that what is ... View full abstract»

At a discussion meeting, arranged by the IEE's Management and Design Division, the introductory speaker (Dr. G.F. Turnbull) stressed that the board of a company must have a strategy as to the type of business it wanted to be in, which must stem from an analysis of customer needs. He distinguished between selling and marketing, and identified essential steps in establishing new products: for each t... View full abstract»

The papers are taken from a colloquium on `Design¿the requirements of maintenance¿, organised by the Design Group (M1) of the IEE's Management and Design Division. Six congtributors deal with aspects of maintainability.
