Our society has become highly dependent on its modern communications systems, e.g. the radio, television, telephone, telex, facsimile, high-speed datalinks etc. A high proportion of the information disseminated over these communications circuits is confidential in nature. In these situations the communicants should take steps to conceal the content of a message from not only the casual listener bu... View full abstract»

  • Coupling between a pair of cables in a multicable environment with various ground-plane configurations

    Publication Year: 1982, Page(s):377 - 380

The paper describes a simple lumped-circuit model of coupling between any two coaxial cables in a system of n coaxial cables ¿¿ at a corner, in an open rectangular duct, or in a closed rectangular duct. Theoretical predictions of coupling made using measured values of ZT, the surface transfer impedance of the braid, are compared with experimental results. The benefits of grounded enclosing planes ... View full abstract»

  • Ideal transformers and guage transformations in lumped network models of electromagnetic fields

    Publication Year: 1982, Page(s):381 - 386

Lumped networks can provide useful models for field computation because of the physical insight they give to the engineer. Kron's network for electromagnetic fields in three space dimensions, however, has the apparent inconvenience of including ideal transformers. This theoretical paper shows that difficulties caused by these unwieldy components can be easily avoided and discusses the role of the ... View full abstract»

  • Space-charge-limited bipolar current flow between concentric spherical electrodes

    Publication Year: 1982, Page(s):387 - 390

Poisson's equation in spherical symmetry is solved numerically assuming that at each electrode there is an unlimited supply of charges of zero energy; positive charges at the positive electrode and negative charges at the negative electrode. A solution is obtained corresponding to zero electric field at each electrode surface, this defines the maximum possible current flow of each charge polarity.... View full abstract»

The paper shows how the Newton-Raphson algorithm can be applied to the solution of nonlinear field problems in which the current sources and potentials are complex. The use of the method is illustrated with reference to the steady-state operation of a single-phase induction motor. Convergence is shown to be rapid, even under conditions of excessive saturation. • A sampled phase-locked loop

    Publication Year: 1982, Page(s):396 - 398

A phase-locked loop is described which can lock onto one half cycle in a repetitive waveform composed of short bursts of frequency of arbitrary, and changing, phase relationships. Such a signal is encountered in pulsed sonar and radar systems and the loop can be used to lock onto, and follow, one target. The technique of locking to a zero crossing has the advantage that it is more tolerant of chan... View full abstract»
