A description is given of the use of silicon as a semiconductor material followed by the development and operation of the transistor and the principle of the integrated circuit is then explained. Active semiconductor devices are able to replace the thermionic valves of earlier electronic circuitry, and the effects of the new technology, especially on computers, is discussed. The use of microelectr... View full abstract»

  • IEE Electronics Division: Chairman's address. Capturing the living image the impact of technology on TV production

IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (1202 KB)

The recent developments in TV technology are reviewed, and it is seen how, since the Second World War, it has been possible to design progressively lighter cameras and signal processing equipment, increasing the convenience of TV production in general and particularly outside broadcasts and electronic news gathering (ENG). Transistors, which began to replace vaccuum tubes in the 1950s, and, more r... View full abstract»

  • IEE Power Division: Chairman's address. The role of the consultant in developing countries

Since the turn of the century British consultants have been operating overseas. Their knowledge and experience have been used to assist developing countries, and a typical role is illustrated by the `case history┬┐┬┐ of a transmission and distribution project in Dacca, Bangladesh, financed by the Overseas Development Administration. The location of Dacca, in a massive delta, created special problems... View full abstract»

  • IEE Computing & Control Division: Chairman's address. Some aspects of computers in medicine

    Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):26 - 34
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (1392 KB)

The field of medicine is one which offers considerable scope for the application of computers ranging from simple microprocessors to sophisticated array processors. To illustrate these applications a number of examples have been chosen in diagnosis, therapy, patient monitoring and patient mangagement. The first two examples relate to diagnostic equipment, the operation of which would not be possib... View full abstract»

The successful evolution of an organisation depends upon the skill with which the reactions to change of a vital resource, the people involved, can be predicted and allowed for. Human behavioural patterns are highly complex and not readily amenable to logical prediction. Nevertheless, their influence on the success of an organisational structure is great. A number of classic experiments have taken... View full abstract»

The reasoning leading to the formation of the Management and Design Division can be summarised under the titles of change, complexity and competition. We are moving through a period of rapid change which not only has technological consequences, but also has a direct bearing on the realisation of internationally competitive products and the management of the whole product realisation process. It is... View full abstract»

  • Electromagnetic field theorems

    Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):47 - 63

The paper reviews most of the general electromagnetic field theorems (i.e. theorems not limited to special geometrical structures) in a compact and unified way. Applications of all the theorems are illustrated by one or more examples. Although the review is aimed primarily at nonspecialists in electromagnetic field theory, it is believed that specialists might also find it useful. Basic knowledge ... View full abstract»

  • Transfer impedance between circular coils separated by thick nonferrous metal sheets

The paper derives integral solutions for the transfer impedance between ideal thin coils and also more practical thick distributed coils separated by a nonferrous metal sheet. The solutions are valid both for low frequencies where the currents induced in the sheet are uniform through the mid-frequency range where the plate thickness is of the order of the skin depth. • Effect of magnetic field and magnetic particles on conduction current in transformer oil

    Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):68 - 72
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (553 KB)

The paper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the effect of a perpendicular magnetic field on the conduction current in transformer oil. Direct voltage tests on samples of Voltesso 35 oil show that the presence of a relatively weak magnetic field can cause a reduction of more than 65% in the conduction current under typical voltage stresses. The effect of impurities in the f... View full abstract»

  • 7Cs technique for project management

    Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):73 - 77
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (635 KB)

There are many techniques that enable a project manager to control either the cost or the progress of a project, but these techniques do not usually combine these two aspects and therefore a measure is seldom available of the cost-effectiveness of a project. The author reviews some current techniques and then develops a new simple graphical one which is easy to apply and which reveals clearly both... View full abstract»

Ideas for the electrical transmission and reproduction of drawings, maps, printed matter and the like date from 1843. Several attempts were made from 1862 to 1872 to establish a commercial facsimile telegraphy service. Later, much work was undertaken on phototelegraphy and in 1907 a Paris-London service was inaugurated. By about 1925, the principles of wireless picture transmission and reception w...
