A unified approach to the subject of electrical ionisation and breakdown of gases in the presence of a crossed magnetic field is presented by invoking the equivalent reduced electric field (e.r.e.f.) concept which is a generalisation of the previously accepted equivalent gas density (pressure) principle. The e.r.e.f. concept is derived from basic electron trajectories in a simplified way using a g... View full abstract»

  • Quasiperiodic oscillations caused by magnetic saturation in a tuned-circuit levitator

    Publication Year: 1980, Page(s):245 - 249

The effect of magnetic saturation on the static and dynamic performance of a tuned-circuit Ievitator is investigated. The magnetisation curve is represented by a cubic function of the magnetic flux. Nonlinear equations which describe the levitator are analysed by the method of averaging. The occurrence of quasi-saturation is discussed analytically and verified by experiments. View full abstract»

  • Power spectra from approximate transforms

Power spectra may be computed via a discrete fourier transform with severely rounded-off trigonometric terms, and recently the ultimate round-off ¿¿ that is to rectangular waves ¿¿ has been proposed.1 A comparison is made between this and a 3 level round-off, +1, ¿¿1 and 0. View full abstract»

  • Selecting general managers from engineers

    Publication Year: 1980, Page(s):252 - 258

A deep understanding of all levels of engineering practice can be invaluable to a general manager of an engineering firm. The qualities needed for a general manager may be found in the professional engineer, but need to be developed and trained. A structure of opportunity, training and assesment must be established within companies so that engineers may travel a career path to general management, ... View full abstract»

  • Management of engineering resources in an Area Electricity Board

    Publication Year: 1980, Page(s):259 - 266

This paper deals with a method of resource management and control developed for the Engineering Sections of an Area Electricity Board in the United Kingdom. The proportion of the Board's total financial resources which are expended and controlled within the Engineering Sections is analysed, followed by the impact of changes in organisation within the Board on engineering resource control. The job ... View full abstract»

  • Possibilities for innovation in small and medium sized manufacturing firms (s.m.f.s.)

    Publication Year: 1980, Page(s):267 - 271

During the last three decades, small and medium sized manufacturing firms (s.m.f.s) have made an important contribution in new technologies. The tendency towards commercial concentration, and increased regulation discourages the formation of s.m.f.s and new technology based small firms (m.t.b.f.s) both in Europe and USA. Governments, the procurement agencies and the universities have a part to pla... View full abstract»
