• ### Drive system design philosophy for mass minimisation of battery-powered vehicles

Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):49 - 53
| | PDF (633 KB)

Drive systems of battery-powered vehicles may, under urban operating conditions, dissipate as losses up to 30% of the energy supplied by the battery. Hence, battery mass may be decreased by increasing the energy efficiency of the drive system, even though this may only be done at the expense of increasing the mass of the drive system. The combined mass of the battery and drive system may thus be m... View full abstract»

• ### Calculation of the resistance of induction motor end rings

Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):54 - 60
Cited by:  Papers (10)
| | PDF (699 KB)

The paper describes a simple 2-dimensional finite-element model for calculating the resistance of rotor cage end rings. The method is capable of modelling the end rings in a realistic manner, and experimental measurements show that it gives results which are more accurate than the previous analytical method. • ### Phase modulated 3-phase pole changing windings

Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):61 - 70
Cited by:  Papers (7)
| | PDF (1242 KB)

The principle of phase modulation is described and methods of design are developed which enable 3-phase induction motors to be changed in speed using simple 6-lead switching of a single winding. The method of switching relies on special 3-parallel path connections which are derived by a novel self paralleling¿ process. Three elemental windings are combined in such a way that the three parallel p... View full abstract»

• ### Railway signalling compatability of inverter fed induction motor drives for rapid transit

Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):71 - 84
Cited by:  Papers (16)
| | PDF (1541 KB)

Inverter fed squirrel-cage induction motor drives for rapid-transit railway traction have recently received renewed interest as an alternative to chopper fed DC drives. Various schemes are either in prototype or revenue earning service. The results of a digital computer simulation study of various voltage source inverter configurations with particular attention to signalling interference is presen... View full abstract»

• ### Novel algorithm for generating near optimal PWM waveforms for AC traction drives

Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):85 - 94
Cited by:  Papers (23)
| | PDF (937 KB)

A harmonic elimination optimised pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme is an attractive alternative to both natural and regular sampled PWM schemes for voltage source inverter drives used in railway traction. However, its application has been limited by the fact that the exact switching angles cannot be calculated online by a microprocessor based waveform generator. The paper describes an algorithm ... • ### Comprehensive calculation of convertor harmonics with system impedances and control representation

Publication Year: 1986
Cited by:  Papers (19)
| | PDF (1015 KB)

The paper describes a computational method for finding the harmonics in large convertor systems, with particular reference to the interdependent effects of convertors, transformers, AC and DC system representation and convertor controls. This work is of particular concern as the number of HVDC schemes and large drive systems increases within AC power systems. The method described is comprehensive ... View full abstract»

• ### Investigation into a class of brushless DC motor with quasisquare voltages and currents

Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):103 - 111
Cited by:  Papers (17)
| | PDF (1146 KB)

The results of an investigation into brushless DC drives with quasi-square wave voltage and current waveforms are presented. Practical results are used to check the validity of a time stepping analysis for the prediction of instantaneous currents and torque. The analysis is then used as a design aid in drawing up designs of brushless DC motor incorporating square-wave¿ features. The influences o... View full abstract»

• ### Interior lighting

Publication Year: 1986, Page(s):115 - 139
Cited by:  Papers (5)
| | PDF (4823 KB)

The paper gives a survey of the principles of indoor lighting practice and lighting design. A short description of the history of lamps and lighting from torches and oil lamps in ancient times, through last century's gas lighting, up to modern electric lamps is given. Section 3 covers the objectives of interior lighting, including special requirements for different applications. The main Section o... View full abstract»
