The paper presents an appraisal of the problems inherent in the production of a magnetic gear. A new form of gear is presented, together with the theoretical basis of its operation, and is compared with a simple wheel gear. Experimental results are included for a complete gear and for the constructional elements. View full abstract»

  • Diagnostic testing of high-voltage machine insulation. A review of ten years' experience in the field

Following a review of the basic philosophy of preventive maintenance testing and the theory of degradation mechanisms leading to failure, available test methods used for assessing the state of high-voltage machine insulation are discussed. Preferred test methods introduced ten years ago for field measurements between the winding and the grounded core are detailed, together with the reasons for the... View full abstract»

  • Semiconductor fuses and their applications

High-power semiconductor devices have poor overload capacity and require the protection of fast-acting semiconductor fuselinks. The methods of co-ordinating device and fuseink in a.c. and d.c. circuits are explained. This includes a discussion on the effects of cyclic loading and forced cooling, and a Section on standards. Examples of the protection of rectifiers, thyristor convertors and inverter... View full abstract»

  • A new connection for synchronous motor excitation

    Publication Year: 1980, Page(s):169 - 173
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (410 KB)

A new form of synchronous motor excitation is presented, which, by means of a simple connection through a diode rectifier bridge, gives, effectively, series excitation in the synchronous mode. The steady-state behaviour of the scheme is explained by means of a simple analysis and illustrated by test results. View full abstract»

  • Parameters of solid-rotor induction machines with unbalanced supply

    Publication Year: 1980, Page(s):174 - 182

The paper is directed towards appraisal of the tubular-axle induction motor (t.a.i.m.) with solid rotor when used with single-phase supply and a Ferraris-Arno phase conversion system for railway traction. A mathematical model is presented for solid-rotor induction machines with unbalanced supply. Some basic measurements are reported of the incremental permeability of steel under conditions where t... • Study of Xi-core transverse-flux plate levitator

An experimental and analytical study of a Xi-core transverse-flux plate levitator is described. A finite-difference approach based on magnetic vector potential is employed, utilising an `inifinite¿ boundary technique. The experimental results confirm the accuracy of the method. Results are shown for the power input per unit vertical force. It is shown that increasing the `goodness¿ factor can ha... View full abstract»

Digital control of a thyristor cycloconvertor using a microprocessor offers the potential advantages of circuit simplification, precision in implementation and high system reliability. A practical constraint has been associated with the limited arithmetic capability of the microprocessor. The present paper describes a method of cycloconvertor control that expressly departs from the conventional co... View full abstract»
