  • Energy storage in polymer films with high dielectric constant fillers [Feature Article]

    A polymer filled with high dielectric constant particles to achieve greater dielectric constant and energy density has obvious appeal. It also is fraught with problems. At low-volume fractions of high dielectric contrast filler, little electric field resides in the filler, and most of the increase in effective dielectric constant results from an increase of electric field in the polymer matrix. For spherical filler and a dielectric contrast (ratio of dielectric constants) greater than 100 between the filler and polymer matrix, the energy density of the composite increases rapidly for volume fractions >35%. For the case of randomly oriented prolate spheroidal filler with an asperity of 3 (i.e., the major axis is three times larger than the minor axis), the energy density increases rapidly for volume fractions >18%. With the assumption that breakdown is determined by the average field in the matrix, the energy density increases with dielectric contrast. View full abstract»

    Space charge measurements using electro-acoustic techniques have dramatically improved in the past 20 years. They have revealed many interesting phenomena in dielectrics. The author believes that the technique is progressing continuously, and that the progress expands the range of applications and raises new topics in research on dielectrics. To make the PEA method more acceptable, it could be high time to discuss measurement protocols, including a standard material for evaluation of systems. Editing a good practice guide will be helpful to users who are not familiar with acoustic physics. Then, it is essential for users to discuss space charge behavior in dielectrics not only by using space charge profiles by electro-acoustic techniques, but with additional evidence obtained by other techniques and chemical information of materials under test. Especially, the simultaneous measurement of space charge, temperature, luminescence, and other possible physical values will definitely help our understanding of dynamic phenomena in solid dielectrics. Aims & Scope

The EI Magazine is specifically concerned with publishing articles in the development and characterization of the dielectric, chemical, mechanical, and environmental properties of all vacuum, gaseous, liquid, and solid electrical insulation, and with utilization of these materials in circuits and systems under conditions of use.
