In this issue of IEEE Control Systems Magazine, we invite Carl Knospe to respond to a query on magnetic levitation. He answers the question 'In my control systems textbook, one of the examples of feedback control is a magnetically levitated ball. An electromagnet above the ball is used to control its position. I have also seen a lab experiment of this kind advertised for sale. Is this just a neat toy or could it be used in a practical application? Why is a control system necessary? Couldn't levitation be achieved with only permanent magnets, which would use less power? Finally, are electromagnetic systems hard to control?' View full abstract»

Optical storage devices, such as the compact disc (CD) and digital versatile disc (DVD), are consumer products with control components. In optical storage, data is represented on a plastic disc by the existence or absence of pits, whose reflective characteristics are different from those of the surrounding disc media. Data is read from the disc by reflecting light off the disc to detect these differences. The maximum data transfer rate is directly related to how well the servo systems perform to keep the read/write elements centered over the desired data and at the correct focus. View full abstract»

This article has presented an introductory tutorial on discontinuous dynamical systems. Various examples illustrate the pertinence of the continuity and Lipschitzness properties that guarantee the existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to ordinary differential equations. The lack of these properties in examples drawn from various disciplines motivates the need for more general notions than the classical one. First, we introduced notions of solution for discontinuous systems. Second, we reviewed the available tools from non- smooth analysis to study the gradient information of candidate Lyapunov functions. And, third, we presented nonsmooth stability tools to characterize the asymptotic behavior of solutions. View full abstract»
