Goods and people mobility is a basic need in the age of sustainable growth and globalisation of the world economy. Air transport and aeronautics are seen as key assets for the future of Europe to meet needs of society and to win global leadership. Airports are identified as the future bottlenecks of air transport. Advanced surface movement guidance and control system (A-SMGCS) is seen as a key R&a... View full abstract»

A diamond mill (a tiny end mill) can cut aspheric lenses and mirrors with diameters smaller than 0.5 mm. The cutting tool has a two-dimensional shape and is spun about the axis of the surface to be cut. As the spinning tool is plunged into the substrate, it cuts a radially symmetric surface to sub-micron accuracies. Commercially available circular diamond tools can be modified to aspheric shapes u... View full abstract»

A method of moving object detection that integrates image gradient information with motion information is described herein. One multi-scale morphological gradient operator is used to detect gradient information. This operator has a very good effect on the detail of the edge location. The result is superior to the traditional method in edge continuity and isotropy. Past approaches have used methods... View full abstract»

This paper presents an innovative system for airport surface surveillance based on a novel magnetic sensing technology. Ferromagnetic objects such as vehicle motors, aircraft engines, and landing gears are detected through their deformation of the Earth's magnetic field. Tests have shown that although the local changes of the Earth's magnetic field are extremely small, the proposed sensing technol... View full abstract»

The software complexity is continuously increasing and the competition in the software market is becoming more intensive than ever. Therefore, it is crucial to improve the software quality, and meanwhile, minimize software development cost, and reduce software delivery time in order to gain competitive advantages. Recently, Component-Based Software Development (CBSD) was proposed and has now been ... View full abstract»
