  • GPU-Based Interactive, Stereoscopic Visualization of Automotive Crash Simulations

    The automotive industry is aggressively moving from physical prototyping to virtual prototyping.This trend is imperative for staying competitive in an industry that faces many challenges. The industry has recognized that simulation in key disciplines such as crash worthiness, noise and vibration, and fluid mechanics has matured to a high level. The decision is, no longer about whether to use virtual technologies, but rather how to more effectively take advantage of these technologies to reduce time-to-market, lower development costs, and to support innovation. To further this technology, the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing (VPAC) developed a GPU-based algorithm (shader) that achieves a high frame rate while also interactively and immersively visualizing production-scale crash simulations.     Defining visualization education is still a work in progress. Visualization education is not just a subject within computer science. Computer scientists are not always the appropriate choice to teach visualization courses on their own. Visualization is not just mastering a set of concepts but acquiring skills.     Over the past few decades, advances in acquisition, modeling, and simulation technologies have resulted in databases of 3D models that seem to be unlimited in size and complexity. Highly detailed models are increasingly produced in areas such as industrial CAD for airplanes, ships, production plants, and buildings; geographic information systems; oil and gas exploration; medical imaging; scanned 3D models; unorganized information spaces; and high-end scientific simulations. Such models might contain millions or even billions of 3D primitives, such as triangles, point sets, surfaces, and voxels. The models often have additional, higher-dimensional attributes associated with the primitives. The Guest Editors of this Special Issue of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications discuss the challenges that complex models present and how those articles represent and address some of those challenges.     This article describes the application of ray tracing to several aircraft manufacturing scenarios. Today's computer-aided design frameworks and techniques are extensively applied in virtually all industrial engineering design projects. The emergence of modeling systems powerful enough to manage an entire geometric project database has made it possible to design complete airplanes, ships, cars, and so on, digitally. Such large-scale projects over their duration generate vast amounts of data. While CAD systems allow modeling of individual components, the complexity of geometric design data is increasing faster than the capabilities of full model visualization tools. View full abstract»

    To improve the visualization of large 3D landscapes and city models in a network environment, the authors use two different types of hierarchical level-of-detail models for terrain and groups of buildings. They also leverage the models to implement progressive streaming in both client-server and peer-to-peer network architectures. Visualizing large photorealistic 3D landscapes and city models has received significant attention over the last 10 years in the computer graphics community. More recently, the availability of broadband Internet access and Web-based visualization techniques is paving the way for large-scale 3D landscapes and city models for a variety of professional and mass-market services. To make such services appealing to a large audience, these 3D models must reach a sufficient level of realism and accuracy. Many solutions are now available to automatically generate 3D models of huge urban environments. Geographic information system (GIS) databases (such as terrain elevation grids, orthophotographs, and a building's footprint and height) provide a good basis for generating such models at affordable cost with minimum human intervention.     Visualization is a method of representing large amounts of complex data in ways that are easier to understand, analyze, and support decision making. Large automotive manufacturers such as General Motors (GM) use visualization with great success. Visualization requires combinations of manual and automated data harvesting. Users must find and access the correct digital data based on a correct configuration of the product to be visualized. In addition, each type of visualization, from real-time design reviews to marketing-based image rendering, requires data to be prepared with appropriate materials, backgrounds, and lighting. Each of these processes requires a different set of expert users and their own optimized process to create specific visualizations or views of data.   • Spring-Bead Animation of Viscoelastic Materials

    In this article, we present a particle-based animation method for viscoelastic materials. All polymeric materials, such as proteins, fats, and plastics, have viscoelastic characteristics. Such materials are composed of intertwined polymer chains, which we modeled in the proposed simulation method as particle chains connected by a spring force based on Rouse's spring-bead model. We modified Rouse's spring-bead model by adding springs to form the connections between polymer chains for the simulation of various features of viscoelasticity. The collision force between particles is approximated by the gradient of the particles' density field. Viscoelasticity is represented by the amount of twining between particle chains. We can change the viscoelasticity dynamically by cutting the connections or reducing the amount of twining between the polymer chains. We implemented our approach using Microsoft DirectX Shader Model 3.0. Although Goktekin, Bargteil, and O'Brien have previously proposed animation methods for viscoelastic fluids, the animation is based on continuous body calculation using the Navier-Stokes equation.   • A Decade of Increased Oil Recovery in Virtual Reality

    Finding oil is always a difficult and expensive task, and moving exploration and production (E&P) offshore quickly drives those costs sky-high. Because most easy oil has already been found, any new discoveries are often subtle and relatively small. Once a company does find a reservoir, deciding where and how to drill to maximize production - and thus return of investment - is a major task. The wrong approach or small inaccuracies can easily ruin an entire reservoir's ROI. Clearly, we need good tools to complete these difficult E&P tasks. In 1992, the University of Chicago's Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) introduced the CAVE, a room-sized, multiperson projector-based immersive VR environment. CAVE laid the foundation for a new paradigm: using VR for petroleum E&P. The HydroVR project both changed work processes and increased revenue for petroleum E&P in general.
