The pencil beam x-ray transmission computed tomographic (CT) scanner was the first type of scanner to be applied to radiologic medicine. It utilizes a rotate and traverse scanning mechanism. The scanner provides 2 dimensional images of a cross-section of the human body and relates an arbitrary CT number scale to the linear x-ray attenuation coefficient. The scanner can discriminate small differenc... View full abstract»

A properly designed circular ring of NaI(Tl) crystals and suitable reconstruction algorithms can provide rapid, high-resolution transverse section images of positron-labeled compounds in the human body. The spatial resolution is limited by the crystal center-to-center spacing and by the positron range in tissue. Using 280 crystals with 10-mm center-to-center spacing and isotopes such as 68Ga. 11C,... View full abstract»

The construction of an image function from the physically measured projections of some object is discussed with reference to the least squares optimum filters, originally derived to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in communications theory. The computerized processing associated with tomography is generalized so as to include 3 distinct parts: the construction of an image from the projection info... View full abstract»

Magnetic disc recorders are in widespread use as storage devices for information in both digital and analog formats. Disc recorders used for storage of video information have been predominately analog machines; however, a new system to store and retrieve video graphics used in television broadcasting utilizes digital signal processing techniques and digital recording on computer disc drives. A signal processing system is proposed, capable of accepting a counting rate which is limited only by the charge collection time of the detector and by the time of the sample-hold circuits employed. This system has not been assembled. The concept is presented in order to stimulate interest and development by others. View full abstract»

Most nuclear reactors are shut down automatically upon the receipt of an external electrical signal which actuates the shutdown device. The design and testing of a simple and reliable Self-Actuated Shutdown System (SASS) for the protection of Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactors (LMFBRs) is described here. Self-actuation refers to the capability of the system to be triggered by abnormal changes in r... View full abstract»

Ionizing irradiation experiments on a new inversion layer solar cell have been carried out to determine its potential for space applications. A scanning electron microscope was used as a source of low energy (2-12 keV) electrons in doses up to 1014 e/cm2. Phototopographic scanning and C-V analysis were used to determine the effects of the radiation on the Si02-Si system. The electron irradiation r... View full abstract»
