An experimental comparison of several simple inexpensive ways of doing pattern recognition when some data elements are missing (blank) is presented. Pattern recognition methods are usually designed to deal with perfect data, but in the real world data elements are often missing due to error, equipment failure, change of plans, etc. Six methods of dealing with blanks are tested on five data sets. B... View full abstract»

Recursive Kalman filters are often used for noise reduction in image data. These linear filters are based on the second-order statistics of image and noise. The noise is effectively reduced by the filtering operation, but the edges in the image are blurred and image contrast is reduced as well. These effects decrease the subjective quality of the image. A simple and computationally fast scan-order... View full abstract»

The distance transformation of a line pattern (DTLP) is proposed and its properties are studied in detail. DTLP is the transformation of a binary line pattern by which the value at each 1-pixel in an input pattern is changed into the distance measured along a line pattern from that pixel to the furthest edge point (type I DTLP) or to the nearest edge point (type II DTLP). Both types of DTLP are pe... View full abstract»

Allocation is discussed of constrained resources among activities of a network project, when the resource requirements of activities concern a unit of a discrete resource (machine, processor) from a finite set of m parallel units and an amount of a continuously divisible resource (power, fuel flow, approximate manpower) which is arbitrary within a certain interval. For every activity the function ... View full abstract»
