Much criticism of the system sciences has been directed at the disparity between the claims we have made about the resolution power of our procedures and instruments, and what we have actually accomplished in the field. The extent to which such a disparity actually exists is discussed, and two strategies are posed for its reduction: a) increasing obedience to the set of procedural dictates under w... The problem of estimating the state of a linear discrete-time system from input-output data in the presence of input disturbance noise when some of the outputs are not obscured by output measurement noise is considered. The proposed hybrid estimator gives the linear least squares state estimate and has order less than the order of the system whose state is being estimated by the number of outputs ... The utility function describing the performance of a stochastic system is often a random variable. Exclusive concern with the mean value of this function obscures the intrinsically probabilistic nature of realized response. As the process evolves in time the perceived performance of the system is a stochastic process. Easily computed bounds on the maximum value of this process are presented here. View full abstract»

The response of human operators in control systems to electrocutaneous stimulation inputs was investigated. Human subjects were asked to track two-dimensional tactile inputs (applied at the waist) by means of force applied to a two-axis isometric control stick. Stimulation and force signals recorded from the experiment were used to obtain mathematical models of the subjects' input-output character... View full abstract»

Allocation of decisionmaking responsibility between pilot and computer is considered, and a flight management task, designed for the study of pilot-computer interaction, is discussed. A queueing theory model of pilot decisionmaking in this multitask control and monitoring situation is presented. An experimental investigation of pilot decisionmaking and the resulting model parameters are discussed. View full abstract»

The effect of retinal spatial interactions on photon-fluctuation noise is studied. We show that lateral inhibition results in an increase of the susceptibility to that noise, whereas spatial summations result in the opposite. We present a quantitative assessment of the adaptive changes in the form of the receptive field that should accompany changes in luminance, in order to achieve an optimum tra... View full abstract»
